The Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

The evidence just keeps mounting – time spent in the buff contributes to better physical and emotional health.

For starters, it pampers your skin. In fact, dermatologists generally agree that clothing can clog pores and provoke everything from rashes to acne and eczema. Underwear is a big culprit because it traps heat and moisture around the groin, potentially leading to jock itch in men and yeast infection in women. Particularly for those who battle chronic infection, it looks like commando is the way to go.

Getting naked lowers your risk of heart attack. That’s because vitamin D is produced by your skin cells when they are exposed to the sun. Studies show that people deficient in this important vitamin suffer an increased risk of coronary heart disease. Experts say that 15 minutes in the sun each day is a good goal. Of course, you don’t have to strip down to your birthday suit for that time. But hey, it can’t hurt.

Sleeping naked is good, too.  If you keep your body cool at night, research finds that you’re apt to enjoy a more restful sleep. So experts suggest either you set your thermostat to 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit – or ditch those flannel PJs altogether. Doctors also say that sleeping nude helps your body burn more fat. Why? Because if you get warm while you sleep, your cortisol (stress hormone) level rises. That has been found to raise your blood pressure, elevate your cholesterol, and fuel the production and retention of belly fat.

Nudity promotes self-esteem. Experts say that when you spend more time naked, your body image improves. “You actually become less concerned with how you look and instead focus on how you feel in your own skin,” says sexologist Dr. Jessica O’Reilly.

That helps explain why regular nudity contributes to better sex – because it helps you to feel better in your own skin, literally and figuratively. Plus, says Dr. Michael Breus, “Most people are intimate when given the right opportunity.” Nudity helps open that window.

So don’t be shy! Strip down to nothing. Your body and mind – and probably your bed partner – will thank you for it.
