Is dust mite allergy common?

Over 20 million Americans have a dust mite allergy. That’s about 1 in every 15 adults and kids. And whether they know it not, all those people need of dust mite allergy relief!

What exactly are dust mites?

First of all, mites are NOT parasites. They don’t bite, sting, or burrow into our bodies. (Most people with dust mite allergies think they do.)

Mites are tiny insects, so small that hundreds of them could fit on the head of a pin. They thrive in temperatures between 68-77 degrees (exactly the temperature range in most homes). That helps explain why nearly 85% of all U.S. households have detectible dust mite concentrations.

Eating mainly the flakes of human skin and hair that people shed each day, dust mites like to live where these cast-off collect. Some of their favorite spots are mattress and pillow fibers, towels, clothing, carpeting, upholstery, even stuffed toys.

In addition, mites eat animal fur and dander. So they gather wherever your pets eat, sleep, and play.

What causes dust mite allergies?

The actual cause of dust mite allergy is Der p1, an invisibly small protein particle found in mite droppings. Over the course of its lifetime, a mite produces 200 times its weight in this solid waste.

In most people Der p1 is totally ignored by the body. But in sensitive adults and children, the immune system mistakes it for a dangerous virus or bacteria. In the effort to kill the infection, antibodies rush to the nose, eyes, lungs and surface skin where they bind to Der p1 particles, trying to destroy them. It’s the binding process that actually causes symptoms.

The most common symptom is skin irritation: itching, redness, hives and rashes. However dust mite allergies can also cause puffy-red eyes, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, headache, exhaustion, shortness of breath, even arthritis-like joint pain.

Experts know that dust mite allergy is a cumulative response to Der p1. In other words, prolonged exposure to mites will eventually lead to an allergic response in even mildly sensitive people.

Finally, children are at highest risk. In fact, living in a home with high levels of Der p1 makes any youngster 500% more likely to develop asthma.

Can I Get Rid of the Der p1 in my home?

No, you can never get rid of it completely. Beacuse mites are aboslutely everywhere. All the time. No amount of cleaning can eliminate them all. And as soon as you finish cleaning, new mites will begin invading.

Furthermore, Der p1 protein allergens are so small and lightweight that they become airborne the second they’re shed by mites. Within minutes they can travel many yards. And can make their way into new homes – through open windows and doors, even heating and air condition systems. Once inside they are easily inhaled and absorbed through human skin pores.

Aware that you can never be 100% successful, aim to reduce the amount of Der p1 in your home. Because reducing it will probably offer real relief.

4 Natural Dust Mite Allergy Relief Options

Use an indoor allergen neutralizer. Always choose a natural formula. Unlike toxic chemical sprays and shampoos, these herbal dust mite allergy relief remedies work without exposing you (or your pet) to dangerous substances. Easy Air Organic Allergy Relief Spray and Organic Allergy Relief Laundry Rinse are excellent examples of natural solutions. Both these liquid formulas instantly destroy mite allergens. It’s like taking dangerous boulders and crumbling them into harmless rubble. They work instantly, and benefits last for weeks.

Use pillows filled with polyester fibers instead of feathers.

Wash bedding weekly in very hot water (over 130 F) and dry it in a hot dryer.

Vacuum carpets at least twice a week using a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. Experts say this alone can eliminate up to 90% of the contaminants that provoke dust mite allergy symptoms.
