Natural Remedies for Back Pain

We’re a nation in pain. And a lot of it settles in our back! On any given day, 15 million Americans are living with back pain, making it the most common pain problem in America after headaches. Together, upper and lower back pain attack 4 out of 5 of us, at least occasionally.

Acute Back Pain is usually caused by mild trauma to the lower back – a sports injury, strenuous work, heavy lifting or a sudden jolt to spine from a fall or car accident. It generally lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Symptoms can include nagging muscle ache, sharp knife-like pain, loss of flexibility, impaired range of motion and difficulty standing up straight.

Chronic Back Pain feels similar to acute pain, but it persists. Some doctors say it’s chronic if it lasts longer than 3 months. Others say it must linger for 6 months. And a few won’t diagnose chronic back pain until the person has suffered for a full year. Interestingly, chronic back pain can go away only to return suddenly, intensely and for no apparent reason.

NATURAL REMEDIES

Keep moving. Researchers have found that bed rest only makes back pain worse. The newest research even suggests that light activity will help you heal faster.

Use hot/cold therapy. Heat relaxes muscles and cold reduces pain. So alternate between a hot compress (or heating pad) for 15 minutes and a cold compress for 15 minutes.

Watch your posture. Slouching into the pain will only prolong the misery. Stand as straight as you can.

Do low-impact exercise daily. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends walking. Some doctors say stretching or swimming are just as good. Avoid running, jogging and twisting until you heal.

Try a complementary therapy. Studies verify the benefit of treatments like yoga, chiropractic care, therapeutic massage, reflexology or acupuncture.

Don’t smoke. Smoking definitely increases your risk of back injury and worsens back pain once it happens.

Lose a few pounds. Being overweight definitely ups your chances of back injury and pain.

Use a topical menthol analgesic. Herbal remedies really do work! But choose a good one, like Premiere’s Pain Spray Mist or Roll-On, to relieve backache without causing harmful side effects. Whether you’re dealing with a one-time sports mishap, persistent arthritis or nagging back pain, these all-natural formulas have been providing soothing relief for over 20 years.
